How to Store Cheese the Right Way
1. Keep It Cool, Not Freezing
Cheese is best stored in the refrigerator, ideally between 1°C to 7°C. Freezing can affect its texture and flavor, especially for soft or semi-soft cheeses. Use the vegetable drawer or cheese compartment for optimal temperature stability.
2. Wrap It Right
Avoid using plastic wrap directly on the cheese. Instead, wrap it in parchment paper or wax paper and then place it inside a loose zip-lock or container. This lets it breathe while staying protected from drying out.
3. Keep Types Separate
Each cheese has its own aroma. Store stronger-smelling cheeses like blue cheese separately from milder varieties to prevent flavor mingling. Use individual containers or wraps for each.
4. Know When It’s Time
Hard cheeses can last weeks, while soft ones need quicker use. Look for signs of spoilage like sour smell, sticky surface, or mold (other than natural rind mold). When in doubt, toss it out.
